Are credit cards the right answer for you?
Some people think that having a credit card is one of the modern day necessities; they think that it belongs to the category of having a computer or even a car. Well that is exactly what financial institutions and banks are trying to make you think, that a credit card is necessary, it’s easy to get and it should be in your plan to achieve happiness. Have you ever noticed how people in credit card commercials are facing different problems and once the credit card comes to the rescue everything is solved and everyone is happy? Banks and financial institutions know how to lure us by making us feel that credit cards can be the easy solution to our money problems. But don’t be fooled, because if you are not careful, credit cards can totally ruin your financial plans and keep you indebted for a very long time.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to apply for a credit card; they can be very useful when used correctly. But before you even consider going to the bank for one, you should understand that your credit card limit is not your money, it is a debt that you will have to pay back at a certain date, and if you don’t, the bank will start charging you for interests until you settle the amount. So it’s really like taking a loan, you get a sum of money that you are allowed to spend, you have to pay back the amount you took in full or you will be charged with interests.
The most important thing here is to understand that your attitude towards spending money is either going to make you fall prey to credit card debts or get you through safely with no piling debts and interests. Every purchase you make using your credit card needs to be planned, or at least you need to make sure that by the time the payment is due you will have enough money to repay it. The trick is not to miss out on payments, because that will only make matters worse since interests will be charged, late payment fees will appear and so on. Banks make fortunes from people who fail to meet their payments, they start charging them with all sorts of fees, until the interests and the fees are more than the original debt.
So plan your purchases, control your spending, make sure that you can meet the payments on time and always remind yourself that credit cards should be used mainly for emergencies. Also keep in mind that the credit card limit is not your money, it is a loan that is available for you to use when you need, only to be repaid in full when the due date comes.
